Christmas at Apple Ridge by Cindy Woodsmall

About This Book
Experience the holidays with the Plain folk of Apple Ridge, Pennsylvania, in these touching novellas centered around love, romance, heartache, and restoration from best-selling author Cindy Woodsmall.

The Sound of Sleigh Bells
Beth Hertzler is unable to let go of a past tragedy, but when she discovers a large, intricately carved scene of Amish children playing in the snow, something deep inside Beth’s soul responds. Determined that her niece meet the gifted artist, her aunt tracks him down, but it’s not that simple – will Jonah be able to offer Beth the sleigh ride she’s always dreamed of and a second chance at real love?

The Christmas Singing
Mattie thought her childhood sweetheart adored her until he abruptly ended their engagement on Christmas Eve. Brokenhearted, Mattie moves away and pursues her longtime dream of becoming a cake decorator, and even finds a new beau. But when Mattie is forced to return home three years later, will learning the truth behind Gideon’s rejection restore her Christmas joy – or open the door to even deeper heartbreak?

The Dawn of Christmas
Sadie enjoys her freedom away from home and her mission trips to Peru, but after four years, her Old Order Amish family insists it’s time to come home and settle down. Levi, a bachelor who distrusts women after a family heartbreak, also has no desire for romance. To keep their families from meddling in their lives, Sadie and Levi devise a plan—but soon discover that the walls around their hearts are breaking down. Can they let go of their prejudices, learn to trust each other, and embrace a future together?

My Review

I was really looking forward to read this series of novels as I really enjoy reading books regarding the Amish and Mennonite culture.

All three of these stories take place in Apple Ridge, Pennsylvania.

The Sound of Sleigh Bells

Beth is dealing with some deep wounds from a past tragedy.  Jonah is a young man who has learned to overcome a tragedy that he endured when he was younger.  Both of these two have thrown themselves into their jobs while their families are trying to help them open their hearts and minds to love. Through Beth's Aunt Lizzy, they are brought together, but not under the most honest of circumstances.  Can any type of relationship even form when they don't even start out on a honest foot?

The Christmas Singing

Mattie and Gideon were once engaged and planning a future together when he suddenly breaks her heart.  After that, Mattie leaves home and goes to Ohio.  While in Ohio, she opens her own cake decorating shop.  After that burns down, she is forced to return back to Apple Ridge and she comes back in contact with Gideon.  Will they be able to repair the damage that was done after Mattie learns the truth as to why he called off their engagement?

The Dawn of Christmas

Levi has decided he will never be married due to watching his Sister-in-law break his brother's heart.  Sadie has finally returned home from Peru.  She had decided to become a missionary after her fiance broke her heart.  They come up with a plan to court so their meddling yet loving families leave them alone.  But as time goes on, they wonder if they really do care for each other.

The stories were very predictable and I admit I had a hard time trying to stay focused while I was reading this book.

Beautiful Girl - by Christiane Northrup, M.D. - review

Beautiful Girl by Christiane Northrup, M.D.

For years Christiane Northrup, M.D., has taught women about health, wellness, and the miracle of their bodies. Now, in her first children's book, she presents her wonderful wisdom to the youngest of girls.

Beautiful Girl presents this simple but important message: that to be born a girl is a very special thing and carries with it magical gifts and powers that must be recognized and nurtured. Through these empowering words and illustrations, little girls will learn how their bodies are perfect just the way they are, the importance of treating themselves with gentle care, and how changes are just a part of growing up. Dr. Christiane Northrup believes that reading and discussing this book with your girls will help them to value the wonder and uniqueness of their bodies and have positive benefits that will last throughout their lives.

My Review

I received my copy of Beautiful Girl in the mail today.  I was really looking forward to receiving this book as I have two daughters and I love finding books and other items that reaffirm that they are wonderful, beautiful, and inspires them to be themselves.

I read the book to my youngest and then to my oldest who is starting to get at that age where questions are asked.

I love how this book uplifts girls!  The author mentions girls special gifts, changes and body wonders.  As a parent, this book definitely opens up a lot of room for discussions and it gently reminds the girls that your body is your body and to not let anyone touch you in a way that doesn't feel right.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has daughters, granddaughters, nieces, friends who have daughters, or if you would like to find a great book to donate to a special cause for the children, this would be the book to buy and donate!  It really is a must read for parents with daughters!

I really enjoyed the illustrations.  Even my youngest, who is 21 months old, loved the pictures and pointed to different items in the pictures.

Claiming Mariah - Pam Hillman

First of all, I want to thank Tyndale Blog Network for sending me this complimentary copy for review!

In light of her father’s death, Mariah Malone sends a letter that will forever alter the lives of her family. When Slade Donovan, strong willed and eager for vengeance, shows up on her front porch, Mariah is not ready to hear his truths: her father’s farm, the only home she’s ever known, was bought with stolen gold. With Slade ready to collect his father’s rightful claim and force Mariah and her family out on the streets, Mariah must turn to God for guidance. Though Mr. Frederick Cooper, a local landowner, promises to answer her financial woes if she agrees to be his bride, Mariah finds herself drawn instead to the angry young man demanding her home.

With the ranch now under Slade’s careful eye, he will unearth more than he ever imagined as a devious plot of thievery, betrayal and murder threatens more than the well-being of the ranch, endangering the lives of those who hold it dear. With days dwindling until the rest of the Donovan clan arrive to the Lazy M ranch, Mariah and Slade must rise above the resentment of their fathers and see their true feelings before greed alters their futures forever.

My Review

Honestly, if I could go back in time, I would love to have lived in the 1880s.  I've always loved studying and reading anything I can about the 1860s - 1890s.  That was quite a time for our country.

This is the first time I have read anything from Pam Hillman and I can, without any pause, say that I am definitely a fan of hers and look forward to reading more from her!

A great author, to me, is one that has you hooked on the first page and keeps your interest until the very last word in the book and this author achieved that!

I adore books where the author writes with such detail that you feel you are right in the middle of the story and that is how I felt reading Claiming Mariah!  I could easily picture Mariah, Slade, their family members, the townspeople, and the scenery of Wisdom.

Claiming Mariah is an easy read as I started reading this at 9 pm last night and finished shortly after midnight!  I couldn't put it down!

The story takes place in 1882 in the small western town of Wisdom, which is in the Wyoming Territory.

Mariah Malone is a determined young woman, who has a strong faith in God.  After her father's death, she is now running the family ranch, Lazy M Ranch.

She lives with her Grandmother and she also talks about her sister, Amanda, who lives in Philadelphia.

Slade Donovan is a man who is determined to give his family a life they deserve.  He has been bent on revenge since he was a young boy.

As the story unfolds, people learn about forgiveness, Faith, love, and realize that sometimes love comes out of the most unusual circumstances.

I highly recommend this book.  By the end, you will feel like you are in Wisdom and know each of the characters.

This would be a great book to become a series! There are so many future possibilities with this book!!

Thank you again for allowing me to review this book!
